Empowering Therapists with AI
Background
Writing detailed session summaries for insurance is a tedious and time-consuming task, often cutting into valuable time with patients. While LLMs offer a way to streamline documentation, they also raise concerns around trust, data security, privacy, and HIPAA compliance. I designed StorAI from 0 to 1, an AI powered note taking tool designed to reduce administrative burden without compromising patient privacy, therapist autonomy, or clinical integrity. I also worked with a team to develop a policy framework that guided ethical, transparent, and accessible design decisions around AI usage.

Therapists often spend hours after sessions writing clinical notes for insurance and legal reasons. While necessary for care and reimbursement, this admin work takes time away from patients. From secondary research, LLMs offer a promising potential to reduce the burden of clinical documentation BUT…
Lack of Trust & Transparency
How is AI HIPAA compliant?
Doubt AI captures the emotional & clinical context of sessions
Overly legal & technical language
Loss of Control & Autonomy
Want the ability to edit, review, and toggle AI features on/off
Need to give informed consent before using AI features
Privacy & Security Concerns
Uncertainty around how data is stored, accessed, or deleted
Concern about legal liability and ethical data handling
Trust
feelings of confidence in the application that will help therapists achieve their goal
Accessibility
the degree to which therapists can use AI with different abilities, preferences, and situations
Privacy & Security
safeguards to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and accessibility of personal information
These principles directly informed my design decisions and how I worked with the backend team to ensure our AI tool meets HIPAA compliance standards.
How might we design an AI-powered tool that reduces therapists' administrative burden while ensuring trust, security, and accessibility?

“Summarizing notes is not the most fun part of the job. I care less about notes but this app makes me look like I care about clinical documentations!”
Therapist 1

“I think what you're doing is amazing and we do need something like this...You guys are very thorough and I would trust you guys over a billionaire to make this.
Therapist 2

“I’m not that tech sevy so wow you guys actually made it easier for me to understand what’s going on especially with AI!”

Why is this important? What does this mean?
This means that HIPAA doesn’t align with the values our users care about most — transparency, autonomy, and full control over their personal data.
Finding these gaps influenced our team to develop a privacy policy framework that prioritized these values.
